If your church has members aged from Alpha (0 to 13 yrs) to Gen Z (13 to 24 yrs), and you have a viable youth ministry, consider yourself blessed! Did you know that only 28% of people under 24 attend church services regularly in the US? This fact is sad but true. The upcoming generation is considered the most secular generation, trailing right behind the millennials.

So, how can you reach out to a generation that seems so far removed from God? You can start by utilizing what you have in your hand! I would encourage you to leverage two specific social media platforms, TikTok and Snapchat (TikTok is particularly popular among younger people).

To use Snapchat and TikTok effectively, you need to take a strategic approach to engage with the younger demographic that typically uses these platforms. Remember to use eye-catching visuals, filters, and emojis to make your content visually appealing. Encourage your youth and young adult leaders to create contents relevant to their faith journey.

Snapchat & TikTok: Ten Tips

1. Authentic Storytelling:

Share authentic and relatable stories of faith, testimonies, and life within the church community. Snapchat's Stories feature allows for real-time updates, creating a sense of immediacy and connection.

2. Behind-the-Scenes Moments:

Offer glimpses into the behind-the-scenes aspects of church life. Show preparations for events, rehearsals, and the day-to-day activities of the church staff. Include snippets of worship services, music, practices, etc. TikTok users appreciate visually appealing and creative content, so use this platform to highlight the artistic aspects of your church to give your followers a personal experience.

3. Quick Devotionals:

Share short devotionals or inspirational messages. Keep them concise and impactful to cater to Snapchat's format. You can use text overlays, images, or brief video clips to convey your message.

4. Event Promotion:

Promote church events, services, and special programs through Snapchat. Create geofilters for events, encouraging attendees to share their experiences and inviting others to join in person or virtually.

5. Q&A Sessions:

Host live Q&A sessions where followers can ask questions about faith, the Bible, or church activities. Create videos where pastors or church leaders answer common spiritual questions. Direct your followers to online devotionals, Bible study guides, or links to church podcasts or livestreams and additional resources where they can deepen their engagement with the Lord. This not only provides valuable content but also positions your church to connect with your viewers as a source of guidance and knowledge.

6. Snapchat Takeovers:

Allow different church members in your youth ministry to take over the church's Snapchat for special occasions, such as services and outreach events. This offers diverse perspectives and introduces different voices to your audience.

7. Snap Map for Local Outreach:

Utilize Snapchat's Snap Map feature to connect with local community members. This can be especially effective for promoting local outreach events, volunteer opportunities, or inviting nearby followers to church services.

8. Prayer Requests and Testimonials:

Encourage followers to send in prayer requests or share their testimonials through private messages. You can then create anonymized snippets to share on your story, fostering a sense of community and support. On TikTok, you can launch prayer challenges where viewers are encouraged to share their prayer requests or participate in specific prayer activities. Encourage your church members to share their personal testimonies. This can have a powerful impact on your viewers.

         9. Collaborate with Influential Church Members:

Collaborate with church members who have a significant following on Snapchat or TikTok. They can assist in promoting upcoming church events, outreach initiatives, or community service projects Their endorsement can introduce your church to a wider audience.

     10. Embrace (& Start!) Trends and Challenges:

Participate in popular Snapchat & TikTok trends or challenges but add a faith based twist. You can even start your own! Adapting popular challenges or trends to share messages of faith can help your content to remain relevant & expose your church to a broader audience.

When using Snap and TikTok for ministry purposes, utilize my REACH method:

Relevance. Engagement. Authenticity. Consistency, & Hashtags.

Crafting content that is relevant is crucial when it comes to creating effective social media content for your church. This ensures that your messaging aligns with the interests and needs of your audience and captures their attention. You can achieve this by addressing pertinent topics, staying up-to-date with current trends, and tailoring your content to the evolving interests of your community. By doing so, you will be able to create impactful content that speaks to the current concerns or aspirations of your followers. When your church shares such relevant content, it not only keeps your audience engaged but also positions your church as a valuable resource in their lives. This helps establish a meaningful and enduring connection with your digital audience.

Engaging content is key for a successful social media presence. Engagement transforms passive followers into active participants, strengthens the sense of community, and increases content visibility. Prioritized content with higher engagement reaches a broader audience and enables you to listen to your community's feedback. Promoting a culture of engagement can transform social media into a dynamic platform for sharing, connecting, and building a vibrant digital community for your church.

Creating authentic social media content should not be underrated. Posting authentic content establishes trust, fosters a sense of community, and nurtures lasting relationships with your followers. Authenticity resonates deeply with audiences who crave real and relatable experiences. By sharing genuine stories, struggles, and triumphs, your church can strengthen its online presence and attract like-minded individuals to build a loyal and engaged community.

Creating consistent social media content is crucial to establish trust and build engagement, reinforcing your church's digital identity.

Hashtags are excellent for promotional content. Create and use custom hashtags specific to your church for brand recognition. Consistently use your unique church hashtag across multiple platforms related to your church or ministry. When followers see or use that hashtag, they will immediately associate it with your church, building a stronger online community. It is also a good idea to create unique hashtags for church events. Encourage your congregation and followers to use these hashtags when sharing content related to your church or church event. This creates a virtual space where all related content can be easily accessed.
